How to Use Gourmia Iced Coffee Maker The Right Way

Do you already know how to use a Gourmia iced coffee maker? My parents have recently bought a Gourmia brewer and I must admit it’s an excellent coffee maker; its coffee is a real treat, especially the fact that makes cold brew fast. Did you know it has a bunch of great features that can make brewing easier? Let’s go over all the Gourmia features and how to make the most of your brewer.

Key takeaways:

  • What makes your cold coffee strong
  • The perfect water/coffee ratio for brewing iced coffee
  • Customer reviews of iced coffee made with the Gourmia coffee maker

What makes the Gourmia brewer so special?

Do you know how long it takes to make a cold brew?

It takes too long, in fact, the whole process lasts 12-36 hours; you soak coffee beans in cold water for hours and wait on them to extract their flavours and aroma, remove the coffee beans and you’re done. Even Starbucks follow this process to make cold brew.

But with a Gourmia coffee maker you can relish a cold brewer within minutes. Set the machine based on how rich in flavour and aroma you want your brew to be and Gourmia will push the water evenly for about 10-40 minutes to speed up the process and make the coffee beans release their flavours faster.

Making a cold brew fast with a Gourmia is easy peasy.

Gourmia’s gear

A Gourmia brewer consists a bunch of different parts you need to put together, but the good news is their manual is well-written and it makes it fairly easy to assemble it clearly showing the steps with images and instructions. The machine is covered with a carton in the box to avoid delivery damage.

The parts in the Gourmia box are:

  • Tumbler (with a scoop)
  • Pitcher
  • Lid
  • Removable Fountain
  • Ice Basket (only used for the chilling cycle)
  • Top Filter on the Coffee Basket (used during brewing)

There’s no harm rinsing every single part of it before using the brewer for the first time. To set up the brewer, you can add just water and let it brew without adding any coffee grinds.

How strong do you want your cold brew to be?

Whether you prefer your brew too strong or not your Gourmia coffee brewer has the right setting for it.

You can go for:

  • Light: 10 min
  • Medium: 20 min
  • Bold: 30 min
  • Concentrate: 40 min

The table summarises the different types of coffee:

Light10 minutes
Medium20 minutes
Bold30 minutes
Concentrate 40 minutes

The more it takes the cold brew to be ready, the more flavours and aroma are extracted and your cold brew becomes richer. I personally prefer the bold option which fair enough it takes half an hour but the cold brew strikes the balance of coffee rich in flavour and at the same time not too strong to keep you awake at night.

What about the coffee grinds you should use?

Gourmia recommends going for medium-coarse grinds to brew top-quality coffee every time.

Water/Coffee Ratio for your Gourmia brewer

You can find 3 different indications on the inside of the pitcher about the ratio of water/coffee.

But I have also listed them below:

  • 10 oz water – 25 g (5 tsps ground coffee)
  • 16 oz water – 40 g (8 tsps ground coffee)
  • 24 oz water – 60 g (12 tsps ground coffee)

For your own information a Gourmia can hold a lot more water than 24oz, but I suggest you stick to the above numbers for better coffee unless you want to drink not too strong coffee.

How to make a cold brew with a Gourmia step by step

Let’s go over the steps needed to brew a great cold brew with your Gourmia brewer:

  1. Make sure the removable fountain is placed correctly on its seat (doublecheck with your manual booklet)
  2. Add the water (10.16 or 24oz) and also add the coffee grinds (1 scoop per cup of coffee)
  3. Place the top filter over the coffee basket and the lit to be ready to start brewing
  4. Plug the brewer in and set the time you want (you can increase or decrease it with the buttons you’ll find near the display)
  5. Use the ‘chilling cycle’ unique feature a Gourmia has to make your brew extra cold
  6. Replace the coffee filter basket with the ice basket filled with ice cubes
  7. Keep the left button pressed for about 3 seconds till you see “CH:LL” on the display which indicated the chilling mode is on.

My overall impression of Gourmia

Overall Gourmia is an excellent brewer that is fairly easy to use.

It will take you just a few minutes to put all the parts together and get on with your first brew.

What really puts this brewer on the map is the fact that it can make a cold brew (a drink associated with its long (never-ending) process that lasts hours) within minutes. Plus, you can choose how strong brew your brew to be.

You’ll be consistently making great cold brews; the process you follow is easy to remember and execute.

Gourmia iced coffee maker start button is not working

If the “start” button isn’t working there might be 2 possible reasons:

  • The machine isn’t plugged in properly. Just make sure it’s plugged in
  • The machine is malfunctioning. Restart the machine and give it a few minutes before you try to press the button again. If the problem persists you can always contact Gourmia to ask them how to solve this issue

Here’s a review of the Gourmia coffee brewer:

I don’t usually leave reviews, but this machine truly deserves it! It’s quick, simple to use, and works like a charm. I like how it has the option to have UNDILUTED cold coffee, which was a problem I had with my old coffee maker. Makes really delicious coffee, so be sure to try it out!

And this is another review of the Gourmia coffee brewer

I was hesitant to buy after reading so many mixed reviews. I also did my own homework and looked around at the competition. I wanted cold brew iced coffee but whenever I’d try to make it myself it never tasted good. This is SUPER easy to understand how to operate it. I see that others are having issues with grounds not getting saturated. This has never happened to me. I followed the directions and put the water in the pot, put the filter in with the coffee and pressed a button. I can’t imagine what they could be doing wrong except maybe not aligning the filter up. But if you follow the instructions that came with the unit, you should be fine. I am a huge coffee lover and not such a good technical person and I found this super easy to operate and my iced coffee was delish!!

Other common problems you might come across:

  • No water comes out: the voltage might be inconsistent. In this case, make sure you’re not facing any electrical issues.
  • The machine is making loud noise: make sure the water tank isn’t empty. If there is water in the tank it might be the pump that has stopped working. In this case, switch the brewer off and give it a few minutes before turning it back on.
  • The brewer isn’t working: the machine is overheating causing the thermostat to work abnormally. Turn off the machine and give it a few minutes to cool down before you start it again.

What is the Gourmia iced coffee maker scoop size?

The size of the scoop you’ll find inside a Gourmia coffee maker box is 8oz and the manufacturer recommends that you use 1 scoop per cup of coffee. For example, if you want to brew 10 cups you need to add 10 scoops of coffee to the coffee basket. (To use a Gourmia machine is as easy as using a CV1 coffee maker or even a Bloomfield coffee brewer.)

Do you put hot or cold water in a coffee maker?

It’s recommended by the vast majority of coffee makers to pour cold water into a coffee maker from brewing. This a bunch of reasons why you should add cold water instead of hot:

  • Hot water can spoil the taste of your coffee
  • Coffee makers are designed for cold water delta T. That’s why they have a thermostat attached to warm up the water.
  • Hot water has a higher content of contaminants.

Do you put ice before or after making iced coffee?

You put it at the end.

After finishing with your brewing just fill a glass with crushed ice and pour your drink over the ice to turn it cold and refreshing. For better results, you can keep the glass you’re planning to use in the fridge wrapped with a wet kitchen roll that helps it get cold pretty quickly. This way you put your coffee in the fridge and cool it down faster.

Let’s wrap it up

Are you ready to relish a cold brew enriched in flavours without needing to wait hours and hours? A Gourmia brewer is going to make you such a great drink within minutes.  Did you know that you can distil water with a coffee machine?
