Ever wondered how to make blonde espresso at home quickly and easily?
Blonde espresso is a fantastic brew with so many coffee fanatics raving about it already. Stick around, in this article I’m going to share a bunch of top tips and tricks on how to brew blonde espresso the right way.
Let’s kick off.
What is blonde espresso?
Blonde espresso is one of the most popular espresso bean roasts.
Where does the name come from?
In the past it used to be called ‘cinnamon espresso beans’, but since Starbucks renamed their cinnamon beans to ‘blonde’ everyone adopted this name.
Is it different to other espresso bean roasts?
What’s the difference with other roasts? The blonde roast is roasted the least time, hence the coffee beans aren’t that dark but brighter than other roasts. Many claim that it has a sound citrusy taste that it’s near to raw coffee beans (simply because it’s not roasted too long to lose this flavour).
It’s also worth mentioning that blonde espresso contains more caffeine than the medium and dark roast. During the roasting process (as you might have guessed) coffee beans lose some of their caffeine content. Since the blonde coffee beans are roasted the least time, it’s no surprise that they contain the highest content of caffein among the 3 most popular espresso bean roasts. Particularly, you’ll find 85mg of caffeine in a single espresso while the content of caffeine in the same amount of espresso made with medium or dark coffee beans is around 75mg.
What are the best drinks you can make with blonde espresso beans?
Let’s go over a bunch of delicious drinks that taste better when made with blonde espresso beans.
- Blonde Vanilla Latte: it’s a heavenly drink that you can easily make at home. All you need to do is make latte as normal using blonde espresso and add 2 pumps od vanilla syrup to levate the drink. You can even try to do it with almond milk if you try to avoid dairy products.
- Blonde Flat White: this is another gorgeous drink with made with 2 espresso shots (blonde coffee beans) and frothed milk on top to create an absolutely banging drink. Give it a shot, it’s worth it.
- Blonde Hazelnut Latte: this decadent drink is pretty similar to the Blonde Vanilla Latte. You can just prepare a latte with blonde espresso beans, milk of your preference and add 2 pumps of hazelnut syrup to really take the drink to the next level.
- Blonde Cappuccino: that’s another cracking drink made with blonde beans. The contrast of tastes (the sweetness of the milk and the citrusy coffee) makes a great drink that you’re going to relish every sip. *To make a great cappuccino, you should be aware of the right ratio*
How to brew blonde espresso with and without an espresso machine
The good news is you can brew blonde espresso with an espresso machine or even without.
Brew blonde espresso with a Moka pot
It’s fairly easy to brew blonde espresso with a Moka pot.
Here are the steps to take:
- Grind your coffee and add it to the portafilter attached to the Moka pot
- Fill it with water right below the side hole (so you let the steam come out of the Moka pot when brewing)
- Place it on a stove and turn the stove on
- Give it 2 minutes and lift the top of the Moka pot to see that coffee is flowing on the top part of the pot.
- Once it stops flowing it means your espresso is ready
Brew blonde espresso with an espresso machine
Let’s have a look at how to brew blonde espresso with a coffee machine.
- Grind your coffee and choose the size your espresso machine manufacturer suggests
- Fill the portafilter with freshly ground coffee and put it back on the machine
- Turn the machine on an make sure there’s enough water in the tank
- Give the machine a minute or 2 to hit the right temperature and go ahead with your brewing
Top tip: What I described above is pretty much what you’re going to do. But different espresso machines have different features; ensure you go over the instructions in the manual booklet to be aware of all the unique features of your machine.
What is the difference between espresso and blonde espresso?
As we already mentioned, the blonde roast tastes more citrusy, it’s roasted less time compared to other roasts and hence, it contains more caffeine, so it’s stronger. If you find it difficult to go to sleep after having a couple of cups of coffee during the day, it’s wise to avoid it and go for medium or even dark roast espresso beans just to be on the safe side.
